Apotropaic symbolism: The head of Medusa on the shield of Perseus, the so-called Aegis, on the obverse of a coin from the time of Mithridates VI from Amastris (h. Amasra, Turkey). Mithridates traced the family tree of his dynasty back to the mythical hero. (Inv. No. AGS 1.18a)
